GIANT MOSO BAMBOO SEEDS (running bamboo)

Why choose this bamboo?
Largest temperate bamboo.
Great wood qualities and edible shoots.
Culms flare out at the bottom making an elephant foot like appearance.
Phyllostachys Edulis ‘Moso’ is the largest temperate bamboo on earth. This species is slow to get established and is best suited for the southeastern U.S.
‘Moso’ culm (cane) sheath is very dark, spotted and hairy and easy to recognize. The sheath ligules, oral setae and auricles are very large. Extremely large culms and tiny delicate leaves make this one highly collectable. New shoots emerge very early making this species difficult to grow in the north. New shoots are very susceptible to frost damage.

I recommend this species for USDA Climate Zones 7 and warmer, preferable in the southeast portion of the U.S. ‘Moso’ is being grown in climate zone 6 with good results, but it never reaches large sizes. You can expect 1/2 or less of the mature listed sizes in climate zones 6. Moso will not survive in zones 5.

In USDA Climate Zone 7 Southeast expect mature size canes to 75+ feet in height.

In USDA Climate Zone 6 expect mature size canes to be 30 feet in height.

‘Moso’ is distinguished by relatively short lower internodes in the strongly tapered, furry culms and has unusually small leaves. New plantings grow slowly, but the beauty of this species makes it highly sought after.

Remove seed from husk before planting.

1.Rinse the bamboo seeds in tap water.

2.Pour 1/4 cup water into a bowl and mix in 3 tbsp. salt. Add the bamboo seeds to the solution and allow them to soak for five minutes.

3.Rinse the seeds and soak them in plain tap water for 15 minutes.

4.Pour a mixture of perlite and compost (in a 3 to 1 ratio) into a seeding tray to within 1/4 inch of the top. Water the mixture so that it is just damp, not wet.

5.Look for the swollen end of the seed and place this end into the soil. The top of the seed can remain exposed or cover lightly with soil.

6. Place the seedling tray into the plastic bag and seal with a twist tie or rubber band.

7. Place the bagged seeding tray in a shady location. Open the bag weekly to check the moisture in the soil and allow fresh air to circulate. If the soil appears to be drying out, use the misting bottle, set on a fine mist, and lightly spray the soil.

8.Allow the bag to remain on the tray for a week after germination, which should occur from three to 25 days after planting the seeds.

9.Repot the seedlings after one month into the same ratio of planting medium in which they were germinated. Bamboo grows very fast, so it's important to not allow the roots to become too crowded.

10. Fertilize the seedlings three weeks after repotting, using an all-purpose fertilizer, diluted to half the strength.

It can be grown in containers.
