Sesame seed are one of the oldest oilseed crops known, and has been used for thousands of years. Sesame is used in the kitchen in a variety of ways, from pressed for its oil or used directly on top of baked goods sesame’s nutty flavor is a favorite in many places. Sesame plants do best in dry conditions and enjoy the heat. Drought tolerance makes sesame easy to grow where there is little rainfall or a forgetful gardener.
Growing Instructions:
Planting may begin indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date then transplant to a sunny spot outside, as the seeds do not normally direct sow well.
When starting use a sterilized seed mix and keep moist until germination occurs, once the sesame seeds have sprouted reduce watering habits to once a week and take care not to over water.
After transplanting your sesame outdoors your plant will do best without any drip irrigation system, instead preferring to be more on the dry side and being able to quickly have their roots dry. Expect flowering to peak late summer, with some of the pods near the bottom of the stems beginning to show ripeness first.
