Carolina Allspice, Calycanthus floridus, 120 Seeds (Fragrant, Showy, Fall Color)Carolina Allspice is a beautiful dense, rounded deciduous shrub with a suckering habit which slowly grows 6 to 10 feet tall with an equal or slightly greater spread. It features very fragrant (especially in the evening), reddish-brown to maroon flowers, 2 inches across, which bloom at the ends of short branchlets in spring. Flowers give way to brownish, urn-shaped fruits (seed capsules) which mature in fall and persist throughout the winter. The leaves of the Carolina Allspice are lustrous, dark green (pale beneath), ovate to elliptic to 6 inches long and turning yellow in fall. The leaves are aromatic when bruised. The quality and intensity of the fragrance can vary widely from plant to plant.
